As part of world-wide Sir Syed Ahmad Khan’s Bicentenary Celebrations, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), High Commission of India; Urdu Speaking Union, Mauritius and Aligarh Muslim University Alumni Association (AMUAA), Mauritius organised a series of events which included exhibitions of calligraphy paintings and sculptures, a release of ‘Commemorative Day Cover’ by Mauritius Post and a two-day academic conference on the life and works of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Indian Culture (IGCIC), Mauritius.

Professor Mohd Zahid from the Department of Urdu, Aligarh Muslim University has been appointed as the Dean, Faculty of Arts for the period from 02.07.2017 to 14.12.2018. He has been appointed as the Dean, Faculty of Arts till the date of his superannuation vice Professor Shaik Mastan.
Jamuna Prasad Raahi (1940-2017), a prominent Urdu poet, who devoted whole of his life for the love of Urdu language, was fondly remembered today at a condolence meeting organised by Progressive Writers Association (PWA) at Department of Hindi, AMU.
Aligarh Muslim University Girl’s School organized an Inter School Nazm Khwani competition and a Card making competition in connection with Sir Syed Bicentenary Celebrations 2017 in which Mrs Sabiha Simi Shah, wife of AMU Vice Chancellor, Lt Gen Zameer Uddin Shah (Veteran) participated as the Chief Guest while the Guests of Honor were Mrs Rizwana Ali, wife of Pro Vice Chancellor Brig S Ahmad Ali (Veteran) and Dr Hamida Tariq, renowned paediatrician.
University Grants Commission (UGC) has selected Professor Qazi Jamal Husain, a retired Porfessor of the Department of Urdu, Aligarh Muslim University for Professor Emeritus Fellowship for 2017-2018.
This is for the first time that this prestigious honour has been given to a Professor of Urdu Department, AMU. During the fellowship period, Professor Husain will work on ‘New Emerging Trends in Contemporary Urdu-Poetry’.
The play ‘Aseer e Hirs’ was recently staged at the Kennedy Hall in Aligarh Muslim University. Written by famous playwright Mr Agha Hashr Kashmiri, the play was directed by Mr Mohd Nadeem Khan and organised by the Department of Urdu, Aligarh Muslim University in collaboration with Dream Weavers Theatre Academy.
Zakiuddin Khairuwala from STS School bagged the first prize in the Inter School debate Competition organized on the topic ‘Cashless Economy will help in development of the Country’ in Urdu language at ABK High School (Boys), Aligarh Muslim University in which students of different schools of AMU participated.
Meanwhile, second and third prizes won by Mohd Nawazish Karim, AMU City School and Abu Usmani, AMU ABK High School (Girls) respectively.
Professor Saiyed Mohammad Ameen Mian Qadri, Department of Urdu at the Aligarh Muslim University has again found a place among five hundred most influential Muslims of the world for the fifth time. The directory is published by the Royal Islamic Strategic Centre, USA.
