The award, which carried a memento, citation and a Sulabh Gold Medal, was presented to Prof. Akram by Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, Founder of Sulabh International in the presence of other dignitaries.
Prof. Akram said that his book “Sociology of Sanitation” is an effort to explain sanitation as a healthy and scientific action interlinking a comprehensive framework including technical, developmental, cultural, administrative and ethical perspectives. The book intensively examines the underlying social structures, social practices and a plethora of incomplete social processes which together cause a culture of insanitation in India. The book also gives a roadmap of possible actions through which the goal of ‘sanitation for all’ could be achieved as a practical reality.
