AMU Observes ‘World Hepatitis Day’

The elimination of viral hepatitis has now been firmly put on world map. To give momentum to this international drive, the Department of ‘Tahafuzzi Wa Samaji Tib’, Faculty of Unani Medicine, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has organised “World Hepatitis Day” on the theme, ‘Eliminate Hepatitis’.

During the observations, Prof Malik M Wamiq Amin, Dean, Faculty of Unani Medicine released a poster titled, ‘Take Action Today, Eliminate Hepatitis’. Addressing the gathering of teachers, students and interns, he emphasised that every Indian should join hands to eliminate hepatitis as our country along with 193 others have adopted WHO’s Global Strategy on Viral Hepatitis.

“The ultimate goal is the elimination of Hepatitis B and C in the next 13 years,” said Prof Amin adding that it is essential to be sympathetic towards such patients and to provide healing touch while treating them.

Prof S M Safdar Ashraf, Chairman, Department of Tahafuzzi wa Samaji Tib said that only five percent of patients suffering with Hepatitis are aware about their health condition.  

He urged the people to join this world-wide campaign.   

“The theme of this year’s ‘World Hepatitis Day’ can be easily adapted for local use for greater awareness, early diagnosis and preventive measures such as universal vaccination, blood and injection safety eventually leading to eradication of the disease”.  

Meanwhile, Dr Ammar Ibne Anwar said that the elimination of viral Hepatitis is not just a public health goal – it is an individual goal for millions of men, women and children across the world. “We all have a part to play in elimination of Hepatitis,” he added. Dr Anwar also proposed the vote of thanks.   

Dr Zareen Beig, Dr Mohd Jawed, Mr Abdul Munim, Ms Farha, Mr Mohd Arshad, Ms Ghazala, Mr Altaf Ahmad, Ms Uzma Khatoon, Mr Shahbuddin and Ms Humaira were also present on the occasion.
