The Department of Botany, Aligarh Muslim University, is organizing a two days National Seminar on "Recent Advances in Plant Biotechnology: Prospects and Potentials" from Feb 19-20, 2011.

The Organizing Secretary, Professor Mohammad Anis informed that eminent academicians from various Universities/Institutes will deliver lectures on the focal theme and delegates will alos present their oral and poster presentations during the two days meet. Prof. Anis said that the main aim of conducting the symposium on Plant Biotechnology is to spread awareness among the students about the latest developments achieved in the field of Plant Tissue Culture and Genetic Transformation and exchange of research findings regarding the conservation, mass propagation, crop improvement and protection of our fast diminishing biodiversity. Participation, is one of the best method of educating students.

Prof. Anis said that Plant Tissue Culture (commonly known as In Vitro Technology) has been successfully utilized in the field of Biotechnology and is rapidly becoming a commercial method for propagating new cultivar, rare species and difficult to propagate plants. From a few research laboratories several years ago, a whole new industry is emerging. A wide range of plants including many woody species have been regenerated through this technique and used to conserve germplasm or in afforestation programmes.

AMU Vice Chancellor Prof. P.K. Abdul Azis will be the chief guest and shall preside over the function.
