History of S.T.S. High School

The School was founded in 1875 by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, the founder of Aligarh Muslim University. The foundation stone of the School was laid down on 24th May, 1875 by Maulvi Samiullah Khan who was a close associate of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and Secretary of the M.A.O. College Fund Committee. Its original name was the “Mohammedan Anglo Oriental Collegiate School.” Teaching in this School was started on June 1, 1875 with 11 students on its rolls. Henry George Impey Siddons, a graduate from Oxford University, was its first Headmaster. The School was initially affiliated to the Calcutta University for the Matriculation examination and the first batch of four students appeared in the examination of 1877. Later on, the School was affiliated to the Allahabad University which continued until 1920.

The School played an important role in the establishment of Aligarh Muslim University. The School then bore the name, Muslim University High School, but was popularly known as “Minto Circle”, after the then Viceroy of India, Lord Minto (1905-10), who generously funded for the construction of its new building. In 1966, the School was named after the then Chancellor of A.M.U., Syedna Tahir Saifuddin, and henceforth known as S.T.S. High School. In the beginning the School was divided into two Sections. Its Primary Section was kept at “Zahoor Ward” (presently Department of Arabic) and the building of Old Guest House. After passing class IV, the students were promoted to its Senior Section in Minto Circle. The School attached to the Aligarh Muslim University, aims primarily at the education of the Muslim Community. Admission, however, is open to children of all communities without distinction of caste, creed and religion.

Character building and emphasis on religious and moral principles are of chief concern and every effort is made to inculcate habits of truth and honesty. The School demands discipline, good behaviour and total obedience of the rules and regulations from the students. There is provision for nearly two hundred students to reside in the hostels within the School Campus. The total strength of the School is around one thousand six hundred. The School provides ample facilities for the development of an integrated personality. It has a well equipped library, play ground for outdoor games and a Common Room for indoor games. Academic excellence is pursued along with games and extra curricular activities with an aim of providing excellent education. The School has well developed Computer Laboratory and other facilities to keep the students abreast with the latest technology. The alumni of the School have distinguished themselves in various walks of life, both in India and abroad.
